Many people who come into my office are dealing with terrible legal consequences as a result of sin. When I’m close to God, He gives me His loving words of wisdom for them. Otherwise, I’m operating upon my fleshly reaction to their failure.

God knows their heart—and when I’m listening, He tells me what to say to touch them.

There are times when our cynicism about a person’s ugly past will limit our opportunity for God to use us to help make their future beautiful. This is typically because we are judging them instead of allowing God to love them through us. We think their sin against God is worse than ours. However, we are all repeat offenders against the love of God. We may not be a drug addict who’s repeatedly fallen off the wagon or the man who won’t stop beating his wife—but maybe, we are worriers and repeatedly doubt the goodness of our Heavenly Father!

God is our good Father and He gives all of us the same hope and mercy for recovery from our sin-scarred life. Maybe we’re not scarred by the effects of alcohol—but instead are wearing the subtly destructive scars of bitterness or self-righteousness. While all sin may not have the same legal and social consequences, it all damages our heart.

The closer we get to God, the more we recognize the profound degree of our own wretchedness when compared to His holiness. He loves us when we’re unlovable. He always has and still does: “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (‭Romans‬ ‭5:8‬) He longs for us to be His children and to live close to Him: “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” (2 Peter‬ ‭3:9‬) His love heals us and gives us the ability to love others. We don’t know the future and we can’t discern what is in another person’s heart—but God knows both. When we tear down the wall of our own sin, God’s love floods in and changes us.

We learn to love like He does!
