There is a vital connection between God and liberty. This is true on both an individual and national level. We are susceptible to sin’s enslavement. Absent God’s mercy and grace, no one is granted liberty from sinful enslavement. Before we’re born again, our choices convict us and sentence us to death. When we choose to sin after we’re redeemed, we forsake our God-given freedom. We must be vigilant to stay humble enough to depend upon God and forsake the sin of our own way. Otherwise, we chain ourselves to the enslaving choices we make in our stubborn independence from God.

As a nation, we must likewise be vigilant to guard our freedom.

There are no shortcuts to liberty. It involves personal surrender and sacrifice—beginning with each individual’s relationship with God. Thomas Jefferson said: “Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of people that these liberties are the gift of God?” A “conviction” is a belief so deep that it guides our actions. Whether individually or collectively, our conviction is misplaced if it is placed in anything less than God.

The Psalmist wrote: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage! The Lord looks down from heaven; he sees all the children of man; from where he sits enthroned he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth, he who fashions the hearts of them all and observes all their deeds. The king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. The war horse is a false hope for salvation, and by its great might it cannot rescue. Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, that he may deliver their soul from death and keep them alive in famine.” (‭Psalms‬ ‭33:12-19)

God is the Author of our liberty. When God’s ways become our strongest conviction and guide, He is our hope and our liberty is secure!
