For most of my life I’ve pursued love, money, positions, relationships and accomplishments with a fierce independence from God, only to find that a lifetime of achieving those things can’t compare to one day spent surrounded by God. I have been blind and missed out on many of the best blessings in life. No one—not even myself—has more goodness planned for me than God! Why would I insanely refuse to pursue the very best that God offers? Simple. I didn’t know Him well enough to discover His goodness. I had allowed myself to be deceived. Sometimes, I still do. God’s Word says: “Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” (‭James‬ ‭1:16-17‬)

As I began to pursue Him more passionately than anything in the world—I began to discover His goodness.

His goodness has become so vitally personal to me that when I step away from Him, I have a cold, gaping hole in my heart. It’s very similar to the painful ache I experience when a man I’ve loved has broken my heart. Only—with God—I’m always the one responsible for the break-up. I’m the one who leaves by choosing the sin of my own way instead of His love. The Bible says: “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you!” (Psalms‬ ‭84:11-12)

When I love God, His goodness is mine for the taking. How do I love God? The Bible says: “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” (1 John‬ ‭5:3‬) When I do things God’s way, I live in His love. Therefore, I must entrust to Him every goal and dream. I must give Him every heartache, worry and fear. I must seek to live His way—not mine. Loving Him doesn’t bring me grief—it can’t—because He is love.
