A friend of mine, the mother of a drug addict, said to me “I hate drugs, because they destroyed my son’s life.” She told me how her son was so deluded by drugs that he stole, rarely had a job, failed to provide for his child, was in and out of jail, and always looking for a handout. She explained that before he started taking drugs—he had so much going for him. He could fix any machine, was a hard worker, wanted to start his own mechanics shop, was serving God, had a wife and a child, had a huge heart and a witty and warm personality.

Then, he befriended someone who promised him “a good time.” For a while, he managed to keep his regular life together, but after a while, the drug became more important than anything. Slowly, he lost everything. Now, he has nothing—except for the drugs. For very good reasons—his mother hates drugs.

But—she still loves her son.

This story reminded me of why God hates sin. Sin hides the truth. It doesn’t matter what my sin of choice is—it’s all destructive because it builds a wall between me and my Heavenly Father. If worry is my sin of choice, I am doubting the power, love and wisdom of God. If my sin of choice is trashing my mind with evil then I am excluding Holy God. He does not embrace the sin that crucified His Son!

Whatever our sin of choice, it’s just like a deceptive drug. God is holy. When we live in His ways, His Spirit of truth speaks to us. Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” (John‬ ‭14:15-17‬) God loves us. He wants us to embrace Him—not sin—so that He can give us all the blessings of living in truth!
