When we allow God’s Spirit to fill us, His presence develops His senses within us. We see with His eyes, hear with His ears and think with His mind. We perceive His presence in others. His sweetness delights us—just like the scent of an apple pie baking in the oven delights our sense of smell or the hug from a beloved child delights our sense of touch.

Like our favorite physical sensations, His presence fills our soul with spiritual sensations.

The Bible says: “Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory.” (1 Peter 1:8)

Although I’ve seen many of the world’s wonders and experienced many of the best things in life—I can say with certainty that the joy of His presence surpasses every single greatest joyful event I’ve ever experienced—without Him. He is the only source of consistent joy. His wisdom surpasses anything I learned in law school and his power consistently makes miracles from messes. His presence replaces my loneliness with love. He daily reveals the fresh and passionate purpose which He designed—just for me. His purpose excites me like nothing else in this world ever did! He is real. His presence is as evident as the lights from the Christmas tree which brightens the room where I sit typing these words.

When we fall in love with Him, He catches us up to a place of joy on this earth which we never imagined existed. We experience the riches experienced by the Apostle Paul who proclaimed: “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!” (Romans 11:33a) How does God’s presence become real to us? After we are born again, we must love Him more than we love our own way. We must daily surrender to His love. We must passionately seek Him above all else. He is worth it. He already proved that He thought we were worth it. When His presence permeates every corner of our life, we experience the pinnacle of our physical existence!
