I cannot imagine holding my baby boy in my arms and knowing that someday he would die for my sins. It would be heart-crushing knowledge. Jesus was born to die for those who didn’t love Him—it’s the greatest love imaginable. I wonder if Mary, as she held baby Jesus, knew Isaiah’s prophecy about her son: “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah‬ ‭53:5‬) Certainly, His Father knew His future. Jesus made the choice—to be born to give us grace. He lay in His mother’s arms in innocence and holiness—The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. This thought inspired the lyrics to “Sleep, Holy Child.”

May this lullaby inspire gratefulness for the greatest gift we will ever receive!

Verse 1
A million miles from the throne of gold, born in a manger dirty and cold, the Savior of the world lay gently sleeping. His Innocence and holiness, the greatest Gift of Christmas, was born to die for those who did not love Him
Chorus: Oh, Holy Child, sleep in peace tonight. Oh, Holy Child, rest your little eyes. For the angels are singing outside and Your Father is always nearby; so, sleep Holy Child, sleep in peace tonight.

Verse 2
Softly He breathes through tiny lips, as the snow falls gently on the winter trees. Soon He’ll give His last breath, His Grace to you and me. So hold Him closely to your heart, and carry Him safely in your arms, the hope of every nation is born within Him.
(Chorus repeat)

Bridge
Child, the cold world is waiting for You, to shine Your love in the dark. You are the great gift of Christmas, the greatest gift for our heart. And when Your small hands bear the scars, and your love flows down the cross, you’ll bring heaven, you’ll bring heaven, you’ll bring heaven to our heart. (Chorus repeat)
