How do we find the deepest, most pure, experience of God’s love? We often think of God’s love in terms of Him wrapping us up in His love—like a mother comforts a child in her warm embrace. While it’s true, God embraces us, that’s not the only way He loves. In fact, His love may be experienced on a profoundly richer level. How? The answer is found when we understand that God’s love is about giving—not receiving. God’s unfathomably deep love for us was demonstrated when He gave His greatest gift of grace—His Son. (John 3:16) His experience of loving becomes ours when we learn to give love without expectation.

Giving love like God requires we exercise copious amounts of grace towards each other.

Grace enables us to live in God’s love. The Bible says: “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (1 Corinthians 13:7) Grace recognizes that the people we love are sinners like ourselves. Therefore, by grace, we can continue to show love when we have been rejected, stepped on, disrespected and mistreated because we recognize that God has loved us throughout our own sinful behavior. Grace gives us the opportunity to experience God’s love more like He does. It is God’s love that draws us to Him and when we love as He does then we have the sacred privilege of uniting others with their Creator!

When we love others without reservation or expectation, we find ourselves surrounded by His magnificent love. We realize that “bearing all things, believing all things, hoping all things and enduring all things,” is not a bad place—it is a wonderful place because we are in the presence of God. We are experiencing His love on a level that transcends a warm embrace—we are so filled with Him that His love enables us to be part of embracing others.

His grace to us enables us to give grace to each other and become part of experiencing love like He does!
