A friend once asked me how I hear God speak to me. I found it surprisingly easy to explain—not because I’m especially bright—but because it is what I’m experiencing with God. The simple truth is that the more I get to know Him, the better I hear Him. He speaks through His Word, Creation, other believers, circumstances, music, prayer and His Spirit. We hear Him, because we are His children and we recognize His voice. “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” (John‬ 10‬:27‬) As a believer, for many years I strayed far from the sound of His voice. His voice had become quite unfamiliar and was drowned out by the howling wolves of the world and overpowered by the roar of my own strong will. ‬‬‬‬‬‬

In the past few years, God has mercifully drawn me back to Him and now I’m experiencing what it is like to live in His “Spirit of Truth.” Jesus said: “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” (John‬ 14‬:16-17‬) ‬‬‬‬‬‬

As I daily make an intentional effort to know Him, He is developing in me a consciousness about Himself. When I’m intentionally listening for the familiar sound of His voice, it is much easier to hear Him speak through all of the different circumstances. I must free myself of my own will and become willing to live in His. Then, like a child in a crowd who calls out for his Father—I am learning to recognize His voice.

Hearing Him speak is like coming home…your eyes, ears and heart, tell you when you’re there!
