Sometimes I become suddenly overwhelmed by feelings which cause a great cloud of confusion and despair. I begin to doubt God because I do not “feel close” to God and I begin to doubt His love for me. I doubt His guidance in my life and sometimes, even that I am His child! It’s then that I must remind myself that God never changes. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” (James 1:17) He does not change, and His love for me does not change just because my feelings do. God prepared a plan for me before I even had feelings. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Eph. 2:10)
He gives me the privilege to be a part of His eternally significant plans! “But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations.” (Psa. 33:11) His Word is always true and He is our Rock! “This God—His way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God?” (Psa. 18:30-31)
He is greater than the sun—which I know always rises, always shines far above the storms, and its life-giving rays kiss the creatures of the earth to help give them life.
I don’t doubt the sunshine just because its warmth is blotted out by clouds and—I shouldn’t doubt God Who created the sunshine! So when the cloud of my feelings overshadows my life and makes me “feel like I’m not close to God,” I will always remember the truth which He reminded me of today. God’s everlasting commitment to me is permanent and my ever-changing feelings are temporary. Although I cannot always “feel” the “Son”-shine through the clouds; I always want to remember He is here! His timeless promise is: “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” (Isa. 40:8)
