If I could turn back time, I would have given my children more opportunities to learn discipline and respect. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very blessed by my children, but I see that this is definitely one area where I could have been a better parent! So many of us do a great disservice to our children because we are absorbed in the notion that a child’s life should be free from the frustration and challenges which predicate many of life’s greatest blessings. We are the proverbial “lawnmower parents” making the way as untroubled and smooth as possible for our children.

Therefore, children are given more material things or privileges than they need or are capable of properly managing. When we give them everything without also giving them the discipline that comes from learning to earn and be patient, they are often shockingly disrespectful and unthankful to those who love them most and have given them everything.

We can be just like this with our Heavenly Father.

Many times He cannot give us everything we want because we are not mature enough to handle it and He knows it will hurt us. We often fail to live thankfully for the great gift of Salvation, and instead, fret and whine for more material blessings. Sometimes we simply may require more discipline and training in our lives before we can handle certain privileges or blessings.

So, rather than giving us everything we WANT, we are given opportunities to persevere so that we may learn how to live thankfully and peaceably in the blessings He has provided. “For the Lord disciplines the one he loves…For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” (Hebrews‬ 12‬:6, 11‬) ‬‬‬‬‬‬

There are some things we must be patient to receive and there are other things we should never have at all. In all things, only God knows what and when is best. I am thankful that He is mine and my children’s perfect Father so that we may all be trained to live in His perfect blessings and bring glory to Him!
