Our sincere prayers to God are as fragrant incense. Not the wooden, obligatory prayers rattled off without feeling, but the pleadings and supplications from believing, loving hearts. “…The twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.” (Revelations 5‬:8‬) ‬‬‬‬‬‬Our earnest prayers are so precious to God, that He holds them in golden bowls and they are as fragrant incense. They are pleasing and precious to God. Our sacrifices of prayer and worship have been described as God smelling a “sweet savor.” Perhaps this is God’s picture of showing us how true worship appears in heaven.

Perfume is the breath of flowers and the exhalation of their life—it penetrates our mind and senses and gives us pleasure. Earnest prayer from a child of God is the expression of our soul’s deepest desire. It is our spiritual breath of life. We capture the beautiful scents of this earth in bottles so they may be savored and enjoyed. Likewise, God collects and inhales every precious prayer in golden bowls so that He may enjoy them!

An unanswered prayer is not lost, it is simply waiting for the right time for God’s wise answer.

Just as we love to breathe in the sweet scent of flowers, God loves to breathe in the yearnings from a soul made beautiful by His Son. Christ gave Himself as a fragrant offering, so we could learn to love like He does. “And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” (Ephesians‬ 5‬:2‬) Our redeemed soul can exhale the essence of His life, and our prayers are sweet incense to God. ‬‬‬‬‬‬We should not waste breathe on obligatory “prayers” which are not from our heart; and certainly never touch His. Rather, we should each desire, as the Psalmist, to “Let [our] prayer be counted as incense before you…” (Psalms‬ 141‬:2‬) ‬‬‬‬‬‬

Walking in His presence becomes the best part of our life—more necessary than food, water or anything we deem essential!
