I was listening to the testimony of an American missionary who had made an incredible difference. His fellow missionaries ribbed him for discipling just one man for nearly his entire term. They called it his “One Student Bible Institute.” When he left the church he started, his lone student became the pastor, started many churches, and led thousands to Christ. God used this to remind me of the importance of discipleship.

I need to identify the people He puts in my life and disciple them with all my heart.

When I used to coach, I trained my team WEEKLY! Yet, I tend to think discipleship is supposed to occur during a church service led by my pastor. Sure, church is a critical component, but Jesus discipled in the trenches of life and developed mighty warriors who turned the world upside down! Jesus said this to His Father: “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me…

That they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.” (John‬ 17‬:6-8, 21-23‬) ‬‬‬‬‬‬

Jesus didn’t teach them everything at once. It was a daily, intensely personal process. If we want to have mighty warriors on the battlefield with us, then we must intensively train them. Otherwise, God’s precious message will be entrusted to children with plastic swords instead of mature warriors wearing the full armor of God. This responsibility belongs to ALL Christians, not just pastors! We should be passing along the most important life skills; that is, how to know God, serve Him, and live in the center of His will!

Walking in His presence is the best part of our life—more necessary than food, water or anything else we may deem essential!
