I’m so glad that God consistently reminds me of the incredible power of using my tongue for good. We often hear sermons on what the book of James says about the unruly evil of the tongue; and I often need to be reminded of this; however, I love to also be reminded of what Proverbs says:

“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.” (Proverbs 25:11)

What an encouraging reminder—that our words can be beautiful and edifying! Each time I open my mouth, I have a choice. If I haven’t started my day with God, then words are more frequently ugly instead of beautiful. The Book of Isaiah says: “The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.” (Isaiah 50:4)

We develop the tongue of the “learned” when we spend time with the Master of all Knowledge. The gift of speech can be such a source of joy to us and to others. Our words can give others a beautiful picture of how God intends life to be. Good words, given in love, are never wasted. Love is shown in many ways…and saying words of love is an invaluable habit.  “I love you,” may seem to be overused, but it should never be underrated! When words of love come from God, they are worth more than gold.
