One day when I came home from work and was chilled to the bone. So I built a fire and pulled the loveseat as close as I could to the warmth. Soon the heat chased out the cold and made me feel cozy and alive again! This reminded me of the people who make me feel alive. These are the folks who genuinely care for others, don’t have a selfish agenda, are compassionate and kind—I’d say their heart walks into the room about 20 minutes before they do! They draw in those living in the cold world like a crackling fire draws us in on a cold night. They are such an inspiration!

The next morning the fire was out, and it was cold in the room. No one had fed the fire to keep it burning. I wasn’t AT ALL attracted to the cold fireplace! Similarly, the source of genuine love is not found within the person who shares warmth—but rather, with what fuels them. When a relationship with God is what fuels us, it produces a fire inside US, and people are drawn to HIM. It never goes out—because His love is everlasting. If we are fueled by anything else—such as chasing dreams, getting rich, or finding a spouse—those sources cannot produce a self-sustaining fire. Rather that kind of fire often burns instead of warms!

What warms us best comes from a source bigger than ourselves, our goals or ambitions.

The Bible says: “But, the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” (James 3:17)

It is the pursuit of God that fills us with the passion to warm those around us. We need to measure what we do today by His ruler. Will our actions reflect genuine warmth and light so others will find the complete satisfaction they will find ONLY in God? Begin each day fueled by the love of God!
