Many of us have felt the ache of loving someone who doesn’t love us. I remember when I was in high school and I was crazy in love. I dreamed about my “love,” and acted all googly-eyed when he was around. When he married my best friend, I didn’t tell anyone, but I felt like I’d been kicked in the stomach. That unrelenting feeling of rejection was so painful, it felt like I was knocking my head against a brick wall until it bled.

Now, I look back and realize that God absolutely was right in not giving me what I wanted. I needed to find HIM first!

Everyone experiences the longing for a love relationship.  God made us this way, but how do we keep it healthy? God is teaching me to ask: Do I desire this person more than I desire God? While I may SAY that I do not; the proof is in what I DO. The test is whether I will crash and burn if I do not obtain the desired relationship. If so, then that relationship is likely more important to me than God is.

The Bible says, “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:31-34)

Just as we wish to make our children happy, God longs to give us joy! What amazing peace, we experience when we rest in the knowledge that our Father knows best how to meet our needs and fulfill our desires. If I really know Him, I will trust Him, and my desire will become to please Him.  He will take care of the rest. I don’t need to worry about it. I am free to love Him and love others. It is so simple…and a lot less painful than that brick wall. When we seek Him, He gives us joy.
