If our presence doesn’t make a difference, then our absence probably won’t either. Think about the people you would miss terribly if they were gone. Why would you miss them? What do they add to your life? Friend and family can add so many wonderful dimensions to our life—love, laughter, bear hugs, camaraderie, and—I could go on and on. Now think someone you wouldn’t miss at all if they were not around; in fact, your life would be much happier without them. That’s terrible, I know—but we all know people like that. However, the contrasting effect that the thorns and the roses have upon us is worth noting because it’s a strong motivation to produce change within us.
Do we contemplate each day and determine how we are going to use our presence to make a positive difference in someone else’s life?
The Bible says: “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” (Ephesians 5:1-2) Jesus lived completely for others. In doing so, He eternally affected hundreds of thousands of people in the most positive way. His sacrifice for us, paved the way for us to make an eternal difference for others!
As I think of those people who have had the greatest influence on my life, I realize that the difference was their selflessness. It wasn’t their wealth, fame, social status, athleticism, etc. It was their compassion, wisdom, love and strength from God, which made the greatest difference! God’s presence in their lives, showed me what He was like. His influence, through them, has worked profound changes in me. When we live in Him, that’s what our life does for others. Today, if we want to make an eternal difference, all of our resources should be rooted in God’s beautiful and eternal purpose he has for us—instead of working so hard for the things that pass away.
