Once, when a friend and I were discussing life’s challenges, he said, “Every time I feel like I’m making progress in being better, I seem to mess up. Then it seems like I am back where I started.” He is not alone! We all understand this! Christians of all ages go through this cycle because our flesh is never any better than it was the day we were saved. If we are trying to change our bad habits without changing our hearts, the changes will never last. “Following the rules” will not quench our desires and fill the emptiness. When we spend time with God, we develop a love relationship with Him, which fills that huge God-shaped hole in our hearts. After we discover how sufficiently He quenches our thirst, we don’t want to do anything that will come between Him and us.

Jesus told the Samaritan woman how to quench her deepest desires: “Whosoever drinketh of this water (from the physical well) shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst.” (John 4:13-14) Nothing which we are pursuing today—health, wealth, relationships, acceptance, power—will quench our thirst like a relationship with God.

Trying to make ourselves better people by ONLY “following the rules” is a tedious and miserable way to live!

Instead, if we draw close to God, we can watch Him change our desires, and we will learn to walk willingly in the right path because of our love for the One Who saved us and loves us like no other. Like obedient children, the better we know our Father, the more we love and trust Him. If we let Him change our hearts, then God’s way will be the way we want  to go, not only because we want to please Him, but because we gain His wisdom to see that His way is best!
