One day I was shocked by a comment from a fellow attorney. We were working on an adoption for a baby who was very ill and might not even live to see her first birthday. He asked me, “Why bother? It’s just a piece of paper!” Was cementing the legal relationship between this baby and her adoptive parents really less important  to him than obtaining a title to new car? Later, as I was still scornfully contemplating his callous attitude towards the heart of this family, God humbled me with the thought of how little I consider the eternal heart-needs of those around me!

So many times I get caught up in the day-to-day work, routine, and “scheduling-survival” that I develop a shockingly callous indifference about people’s hearts. When I consider what’s on my agenda today, I must ask, how much of it includes things that makes an enduring difference. God has given us two great commandments: Love Him and love others.

When we live our fleeting and frail life in God’s heart, it gives us the opportunity to make a huge difference!

The Bible says: “As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field…for the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him…to those that remember his commandments to do them.” (Psalms 103:15-18)

If today, we follow our daily routine with little thought about the deeper, heart needs of people, then we, too, will be like a flower that fades and is remembered no more. When we remember to live for God’s glory, our life is remembered in everlasting proportions. Our life can be part of the miraculous catalyst which leads a spiritual orphan to his Forever Father!
