One day I was listening to a lady talk about the many tragedies in her life and she said, “I wonder if there is something bad that I’ve done for which God is punishing me?” This wasn’t the first time I’d heard someone make that comment. In fact, I used to think this way, too. It must make  God incredibly sad to hear His children talk about Him this way. I would be physically sick if my children thought that way about me. What a wrong image of God, we have been given! Do we forget that He loves us so much that His only Son volunteered to suffer and die a horrible death to save us? Why then, would we EVER think that He is plotting evil against us?

The plain truth is that God gave mankind the freedom to choose evil and—we did. That choice ripped deep into the fabric of God’s good and perfect world.

With free will comes the responsibility for the choices we make; FURTHERMORE—bad things DO happen to good people! Sometimes we are reaping what we sow and sometimes we are just caught in the awful rupture that sin has torn in the fabric of God’s good creation. If we choose to blame God for the trials, we are only hurting ourselves because we are shutting out God, who offers us His companionship, comfort, wisdom, and power—as we walk through the pain. He offers us His magnificent love to comfort us while we walk through this life.

The Bible says: “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (1 John 4:10) We need to remind ourselves and others of this comforting truth every day! God is not to blame for our trouble; He is the balm for our trouble!
