A valuable lesson I learned from my Jiu Jitsu instructor is that good technique can enable me to prevail over brute strength. Utilizing my instructor’s techniques when I grapple can give me the tools I need to subdue a person much stronger and larger than myself. This is also what happens when we apply the wisdom of God’s Word to our life. The Bible says:

“If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.” (Ecclesiastes 10:10)

Just as a dull knife requires the application of more strength to be useful, so is a life which is devoid of God’s wisdom—ineffective and inefficient. The older I get, the more I see that ALL problems, are best handled by first going to God and asking for His wisdom. Too many times I have worried myself into a sleepless night, only to find it accomplished little towards solving the problem. It was like chopping a tree down with a dull ax.

It mostly just wore me out!

What I should have done was “sharpen my blade on The Rock of God’s Word. Because I am so trained to rely upon my own efforts to solve problems, it was a new experience to see God solve problems. However, when I learned to begin my day with Him and then seek Him throughout the day, I began to His intellect at work through me. Wow! His wisdom, sharpens my intellect beyond the dull capabilities of my own. God’s wisdom is a magnificent experience!
