Love sets us free; it does not enslave us. So many times in life, I’ve been so passionate in my desire to be loved by a man that I’ve been enslaved by it. It controlled my life and all of my most important decisions. Because I longed to be loved so much by a man, I wrongly believed it would give me my greatest joy. My problem was I didn’t understand that only God can give me the kind of love I was seeking. He’s the only one who loves perfectly. His love is so vastly unselfish that we can barely comprehend it. The Bible says:

“For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
‭‭(Romans‬ ‭5:7-8‬)

Wow! That’s love! Our problem is that we often don’t understand what love is or where it originates. Love is giving without expectation of receiving. It’s what God does. It’s who He is. When we are filled with Him, He enables us to love like He does. We aren’t so desperate for love from others. We can give without expectation of reciprocation.

How do we experience God’s amazing love? After we become His child through the gift of salvation, our new life in Him enables us to obey Him from our heart. Obedience isn’t nearly as difficult when our Master is Love. Obedience draws us closer to Him (just as disobedience pushes Him away). His presence fills our deepest desire for love. In Him, we experience love on a level we never knew existed.
