I once asked a very successful trial lawyer: “Who is God to You?” He responded: “In all my years of trying cases, I think that’s the hardest question I’ve ever been asked!” I was impressed with his frankness and humility. He’s right—it can be a hard question—especially if our relationship with God is non-existent (meaning we’ve never been born against) or shallow (we have no real friendship with Him). But—we ALL need to answer this question HONESTLY.

Before God was my best friend—my answers were shallow and untruthful—because the truth is, He had never meant enough to me that I’d taken the time to get to know Him. I was afraid of Him and sometimes angry with Him. I spent most of my Christian life running away from Him. Thus, I could not speak personally about a relationship with Him, nor about any great impact He had on my life. The most influential people in our life change us.

However, when I began to seek Him, He began to change me and THEN I had a real experience to share!

Now—praise be—I can say without a doubt, He is the friend who knows me and my needs better than I do. He is my Father and longs to give me my heart’s desires. He is my Almighty Counselor, and gives me wisdom beyond my own comprehension. He is my Protector, and guards my heart and fills me with His love. He is my Personal Trainer, and coaches me through life’s gym and builds my spiritual stamina and strength.

God is the one I don’t want to live even one day without.

I have heard these powerful words of Isaiah every year at Christmas, “His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.”  (Isaiah 9: 6) However, I didn’t comprehend this on a personal level until I began to passionately seek God. I am quite certain I have only touched the tip of the iceberg of Who God Is. Every day, I look forward to the adventure of learning more!
