A near-death experience can be a much-needed reality check. I’ve never been afraid to fly, in fact when I was learning to fly, some of my favorite lessons were simulating stalls. But there was one time I was afraid… We were at cruising altitude and hit such bad turbulence that stuff was flying around inside the cabin, the plane was rattling, popping and groaning like it was going to bust! It was surreal. The flight attendant’s voice was shaking as she attempted to reassure us of the situation. This went on for what seemed like forever. When we finally landed, the plane hit the runway so hard my whole body bounced off the seat. All passengers paused in silence, as if saying a prayer of thanks, and then burst into frenzied applause. We made it!!

During the craziness, I had contemplated death and meeting God. I thought of this scene in heaven from Matthew chapter 25: “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for youfor I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.’ Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?’ The King will reply,

‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”

As death seemed like a very real possibility during this flight, I began to realize that I’d wasted so much time. I began to pray—not for another chance—but for God’s forgiveness for the years I’d spent consumed on lesser things like my career and pursuit of my own happiness. After we landed, I resolved to commit myself more fervently to become a picture of God’s love and strength.

I’m so very thankful for this “death check” experience, because in reality, we’re all dying; we just don’t know when it will happen. I want to live like I KNOW I am dying—and rejoice in each opportunity to live the passion of God’s love!
