When someone once reminded me of a horrible sin I committed years ago and I began to feel the familiar surge of sick shame, I prayed: “God, haven’t I paid enough for this sin? It happened so long ago, and I am so different now. I’m doing Your will. Why, God???!”

God gave me two encouraging promises:

1. “Remember” Remember the shame of my past sins enough to deter me from committing future ones.

2.  “God forgets”- When I repent, God forgives me as far as the east is from the west.

The Bible says: “For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.” (Psalms 103: 11-12) Others will remember and talk about my sin; but God does not! My past reminds me to NOT do things “in the dark,” “under the radar,” or “behind closed doors,” because I don’t want to live in the prison of shame!

While on this earth, I want to walk with my face warmed by God’s light, not hidden in the shame of my sin. A world full of hurting people need to see what it looks like to live free from shame so they, too, can find their freedom in Christ. Loving God with all our heart, soul and mind gives us the greatest freedom we will ever experience!
