Brazilian Ju Jitsu has taught me what it feels like to be powerless. I’ve grappled until exhaustion and been knocked flat on my back unable to lift even a finger! It’s a crazy, helpless feeling—willing your body to get up but not being able to move. Life can be that way too. There have been days when life hits me so hard that I don’t even want to get out of bed. I just can’t deal with any more problems. It’s when I’m this powerless that God really shows me His strength!

When I’m this helpless, I must rely upon God to give me strength, because if I try to operate without His power, I’ll fall flat on my face! The Bible says:

“He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary…but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”  (Isaiah 40: 29-31)

I’ve read this verse many times before without really understanding it. You see, I’m a hard-charging attorney and weakness is not a useful tool of my trade. I don’t want to wait and I don’t want to rely on anyone! I want to get back in the action – right now! I’m glad God’s teaching me what it means to be completely devoid of my own strength so I have to wait for His  strength. I need to learn be still and focus on my Creator. While I’m flat on my back—God has my full attention. I can listen for His instructions ! Our helplessness ushers God’s magnificent power over the threshold of our stubborn heart.
