Late one Friday afternoon, after a three-day jury trial settled and I was contemplating with relief and anticipation all the things I could do with my free time. My first thought was to run away into the woods and hide from work! I wanted to do something for me! Then God reminded me of yesterday’s devotion and the blessings I might miss from not listening to Him. These verses came to mind:

“A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by…our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures…for they quickly pass, and we fly away. Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalms 90: 4, 10, 12)

God reminded me of what had happened earlier in the day—before my case settled. In my big, important, lawyer-rush I’d almost missed a blessing. I was hurriedly meeting with a client so I could get back to my trial preparation, when she said something which slowed me down. She said: “I’m just so empty. I don’t know what is wrong with me, and I do not know what will make me happy.” God stopped me and I shared how He has filled the void in my life and how He can do that for her too. We talked for quite a while and I could tell that a seed was planted in her heart. I thought—wow! I almost missed this blessing by rushing to prepare for a trial that would never happen! God had allowed me to have a “heart of wisdom” experience.

This changed my weekend plans. I began to ask myself: “What blessing does God have in store for my time?” For all the days God gives me, I want to live in His heart of wisdom and never miss the eternal blessings He has planned.
