One morning while spending time with God, I asked Him repeatedly, “What do you want to teach me today?” I heard nothing. I felt very far from God. Gently, God reminded me of my behavior the day before when I didn’t get something I wanted. I wasted an entire evening feeling sorry for myself, was completely unproductive and acted like a spoiled child! As I sat there in the silence, I realized that what I was missing the most was the closeness God’s presence. I began to pray and ask for God’s forgiveness. As I was praying, He reminded me of His promise:

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)

“Seeking His kingdom” means our life’s narrative and deepest desires are grounded in Him.

When we live controlled by our temporal circumstances, we are setting ourselves up for disappointment. Circumstances change; God does not.

We are all tremendously blessed, not just because we have health, wealth, family, and many things that make our lives wonderful; but most importantly, because God has given us a reason to live which transcends our ever-changing circumstances!

Furthermore, we enjoy the temporal blessings God gives us SO much more when they are utilized for an eternal purpose. What I wanted—and didn’t get—will only be wonderful IF it is part of God’s plan for me. If He hasn’t given it to me; I don’t need it. When God is what I want the most, I don’t live in disappointment.
