Where did David get the courage to fight Goliath? Was it because he was a highly skilled warrior? No, he was only a musician and a shepherd. Was it his superior weapons? No, he used a slingshot and stones. Was it the army standing behind him? No, they ran like scared chickens. Was it family support? No, his brothers told him to shut up, go home, and tend the sheep. David didn’t have powerful resources to fight the giant Goliath; yet, David’s words demonstrate remarkable courage:

“Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.” (1 Samuel‬ ‭17:45-46‬)

Wow—that gives me chills! Because David spent countless hours with God, and thus, he KNEW that Goliath was no problem for GOD. He knew that Goliath’s outright cursing of God was wrong and should be made right. Because he really knew God, David did not need confidence in his weapons, his friends, the army, or his family to do what was right.

On the day he faced Goliath, David’s knowledge of God translated into courage!

Do we have the kind of relationship with God that makes us bold enough to face the giants in God’s name? God fears no one. When we really know Him, His sovereignty reveals the weaknesses in the strong towers of the wicked. We are not afraid. We know that there is no one who can stand before God. When we know God better than we know anything, He is our greatest source of courage, and we are not afraid!
