We need to “own our joy” and not allow thieves to rob us of it. Who are these thieves? The person who did or said something completely ugly or stabbed us in the back? Or, the one who didn’t respond to an email or text? Maybe one “liked” our Twitter post? Perhaps that boy or girl we are enamored with is ignoring us? We are surrounded by potential joy thieves and sometimes we’re our own worst thief! But….

God wants you to own your joy.

We own houses, cars, electronics, jewelry, clothing and businesses, and we don’t let others steal those things from us, do we? So, why in the world would we let anyone steal our priceless joy? For me, well, it’s because I take my eyes off the Source of joy and get wrapped around the axle by killjoys. I give them the keys to my house and let them steal one of my most priceless possessions! The Psalmist wrote:

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalms‬ ‭16:11‬)

When I tune in to God first thing in the morning and am guided by Him, then no person or circumstance can steal my joy. When I awaken, I like to greet Him even before I get out of bed. He draws me into our time together in the early morning hours. He walks with me out of the door of my home and into the world. As I work and live, God allows me to identify the people and things taking my joy, and to handle the situation with grace. He reminds me that by His grace, He is my joy and—He will never leave me or forsake me.

Deep and lasting joy is not state of delirious, giggling happiness; rather, it is contentment in any  situation. It manifests itself by giving us true peace even in the most terrible circumstances because God never changes. I love the challenge to “own my joy!” God is for me and no one (not even myself) can stand against me!
