Do you ever find yourself becoming addicted to something which gives you comfort, a rush of physical pleasure, or temporary satisfaction? I’m not just talking about inherently bad things like drugs, stealing, pornography, etc. Rather, even developing an unbalanced desire for attention, affection, food, exercise, work, etc., can send us into an unhealthy cycle of addiction. We cultivate a swollen need and if we don’t have it, we are perpetually unsatisfied! I’ve experienced it with many of the “harmless” things I’ve listed above and it made my life miserable. There is only one addiction that I’ve developed that has never hurt me…God.

The more time I spend with God, the more I become addicted to His presence which perpetually satisfies desires that are so deep within me that I didn’t even know they existed until I knew Him.

Now, when I fall into a mental funk, I don’t resort to working out, talking to a friend, eating, or losing myself in a good book. They are such poor substitutes for God! King David wrote:

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul…Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. (Psalms 23:1-3)

God is our green pasture, our still water, our soul’s restoration, and the light for our path through this valley of death we’re treading. He is our bread of life and living water and—we can never get enough of Him!
