There are times when our “good” work become our god. However, we don’t often recognize that they’ve taken the place of God until we’ve lost His peace and strength. To avoid making our good works our god, we must intentionally keep God on the throne of our heart. We’re so easily led into championing good causes—or even religious ones in the name of God—but the work can subtly become our god. Good works—without God—are simply another idol we serve. When we do them under the guise of serving God, we find ourselves alone, fighting a battle for a God we don’t believe in enough to worship as Sovereign.

Let me use an example from my own life. Writing these devotionals everyday seems like the type of work that would glorify God, right? However, sometimes I take God off the throne of my heart and instead of working in His strength and wisdom, I labor under the pressure of the expectations of others. In MY own strength—I study God’s Word, write, edit, post on the website, write the SEO for the website, and publish to all the social media platforms. It’s painful, not peaceful! When producing these devotionals becomes my god, I’m no longer engaged in GOD’S work—it’s my own. Thus, I’m no longer operating in HIS strength. I am operating under the fear of failure and—I lose my peace.  The Bible says:

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” (Isaiah‬ ‭41:10)

When GOD is the greatest passion of my heart; then HE supernaturally strengthens me in such a way that I KNOW the work I’m doing is too great to be mine; thus, it cannot be my god because it clearly belongs to HIM. Then—He fills me with peace.

When God is on the throne of our heart, our good works belong to Him!
