friend once told me that all that her little boy wanted for his birthday was “cherries and cuddles.” Of course, she happily granted his sweet request! His childlike faith, gave him no reservations to ask! Her story helped me wrap my mind around the truth that God really does care about my silly, insignificant wishes. If we as parents long to grant our children’s small wishes, how much more does God long to do this for us?

We struggle to believe that God really cares enough to want to hear about what we want—not just what we need. Yet, we know from life’s experiences that a loving parent or star-crossed lover doesn’t give ONLY practical gifts! There is great joy in giving a completely impractical, but much longed-for gift, right??? One reason it’s so tough for me to comprehend that God desires to delight me is that I don’t delight in HIM as I should, thus, I don’t seek to know Him like I could. My friend’s son had no problem asking for cherries and cuddles. Why? He knows his mamma.

So how can I know that God cares about me?

I must seek to know Him. He already knows me better than any lover or mother does; so any deficit in the relationship lies with me. If want to know that God cares about my small things, then I need to be close enough to Him to be able to hear, see, and feel Him. King David had this kind of deep relationship with God and it’s manifested in what he wrote:

“O Lord, in your strength the king rejoices, and in your salvation how greatly he exults! You have given him his heart’s desire and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah For you meet him with rich blessings; you set a crown of fine gold upon his head.” (Psalms‬ ‭21:1-3‬)

The more I pursue God, the more I realize that He DOES want to know about my “cherries and cuddles” wishes. They are not silly to my Father Who loves me and knows me like no other.
