Soren Kierkegaard wrote, “Boredom is the root of all evil.” What? It’s an interesting thought to ponder about our current culture. Entertainment is a multi-billion dollar industry because there’s never enough to satisfy the restlessness of a bored culture. Our society is living the old Loverboy song: “Everybody’s working for the weekend, everybody wants a little romance.” Think about it—Do you enjoy Monday as much as Saturday? Why not?

Does a culture that places such high value on the pursuit of pleasure, really satisfy its people? Making pleasure our primary narrative, is as dangerous as picking up a cocaine addiction. The highs will eventually destroy any ability to enjoy any other part of the amazing life God has planned for us!

While it isn’t wrong to enjoy life’s pleasures, God did not create us for the primary purpose of seeking pleasure!

The Bible says: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10) Perhaps you are thinking that doing God’s work is not your idea of a satisfying life. I didn’t think so either—until I fell in love with God.

Boredom, like cocaine, is a cruel taskmaster which works us to death in our quest for pleasure. I’ve served THAT master, and I can tell you, God in Heaven is the better Master by far. His pursuits satisfy us like nothing else can. He always has amazing, eternal things planned. Every day is a new discovery! The Bible says: “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. (1 Corinthians 2:9) When we’re in hot pursuit of the Creator of the Universe—we’re never bored!
