Have we ever thought about what we mean when we say that someone has “made us unhappy?” I’ve used that excuse to be in a bad mood and then let it ruin my day. I forget that the choice to be grumpy is my choice. People who disappoint us or try to cause us angst will surround us until we leave this earth, but their behavior does not have to control us! To minimize their negative effect on us, we must change our heart’s perspective.

If I choose to be sad or angry when someone hurts my feelings, it’s because I’ve failed to train myself to think about the big picture. In fact, I’ve made myself  the big picture! God’s Word gives us this wonderful wisdom: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair. Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:8, 15, 18)

The children of God are commissioned to be engaged in work that is eternal.

God’s work is often imperceptible nonsense to those who are not God’s children. When we allow someone who is wrapped up in what is temporary to unseat our eternal perspective, it is because we have allowed our perspective to shift to theirs. What a waste! When God is in control of our mind, it is not adversely affected by our environment because He is not! If our mind is focused on ourselves, then our circumstances change our mood and produce a yo-yo of emotions and actions! Is this how we want to live?

We each can be set free from the shackles of despair! When I begin to feel myself struggle with anger or hurt feelings, I know that I’ve put my focus back on myself, and it’s time refocus my mind and heart in the pursuit of knowing God as my greatest passion. Sometimes it’s a daily battle, but experience with God has taught me that I’d much rather live free than live for myself
