remember receiving a very hateful email, which was full of false accusations, and my self-righteous anger exploded inside of me. I was shocked and angry! How dare she? It was a perfect opportunity for me. What? Yes, it was one of the best times for me to practice developing the mind of Christ! (Philippians 2:5-8) Christ was falsely accused to a degree which I cannot fathom; yet, while He could have destroyed his accusers, instead He died for them. This thought silenced my anger. Wow!

When God gave me this thought, I was convicted beyond measure because humility and sacrifice were the furthest thoughts from my mind for my accuser.

God revealed the depth of my arrogance to me. You see, when she didn’t apologize, I had even contemplated the thought that if she ever apologized, I’d tell her our relationship was so irreparably damaged that it could never be restored. Such deluded arroganceThankfully, God does not think about me, like I think about others! He is faithful to forgive. The Bible says, “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:8-9) But I had to be reminded that part of restoring my relationship with God involves confessing my own sin of unforgiveness. I can’t change her, but I can change me.

If I want to have the mind of Christ, which enables me to be free from the slavery of unforgiveness, I must forgive and begin opening up the channels of communication with Him.

It was actually a relief to discover that I didn’t need to worry about her hate for me. I have received so much mercy from God, that I realized I had plenty of mercy to share with her. With this mind-set, God then took it a step further and showed me how to do something kind for her. It didn’t change her. It doesn’t matter. It changed me. This is the gift of having the mind of Christ. Developing the mind of Christ frees us to love like He does!
