One of the most exciting experiences is to see God transform our hearts to love others like He loves us. We get a taste of what God does for US every day. I remember one of the first times I saw Him doing this in me. It was during a time when I was very faithfully and deliberately seeking to know God; and suddenly, out of the blue, I recieved a vile, disparaging, and painful email from someone I had been very good friends with for several years. After I got past the shock—but before I could feel hurt—God miraculously flooded my heart with compassion for her.
I was shocked all over again—this was a new experience! This was definitely a God-experience!
It was as if God was allowing me to see HER like He sees ME—when I have sinned against Him. His merciful compassion filled me and I saw her unhappy heart more than I felt my own hurt or anger. It was a life-changer. I saw God’s presence lead my heart into HIS reaction instead of being be led astray by MY hurt feelings. I was experiencing a miracle of love. This is much better than hurt and bitterness. I wanted to develop it as a habit. Well, to make this miracle a habit of my heart, God made it clear I needed to engage in faithfully seeking His heart. His heart can’t be faked.
God loves me despite my crimes against His love. If I love Him, His Word says that I WILL love others:
“If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.” (1 John 4:20-21)
This first taste of loving like God does—so freely and spontaneously—gave birth to a love-addiction in my life. I want to experience it more. I am quite sure, it is one of the most valuable lessons God taught me!
Publisher’s note: Learning to love this way inspired Kimberly Faith’s song “Love Begins.”
