My summer intern, Trevor, and I were discussing how best to handle a cantankerous attorney while also trying to “walk in love,” as commanded by the Bible. (Ephesians 5:2)  My initial thoughts on how to deal with this attorney’s ugly behavior had very little to do with love. Then, Trevor blew me away with his down-home wisdom. He said, “Sometimes you just gotta do your business.” I laughed out loud because his words were so true and yet, so simple! What was my business? It was representing my client—NOT punishing another attorney! His actions will eventually catch up with him, and I didn’t need to waste my time. That’s what the law, the judge, and the Final Judgment are for—making all wrongs—right. I needed to stay focused.

While justice isn’t always done perfectly on earth, it certainly will be in heaven!

When we are confronted with a person who is working evil, we need to stay focused on our job. If God calls us to address the person’s behavior, the most effective way to do it is to stay close to Him. I know it’s hard to believe, but He really IS smarter than we are! It’s a lot easier to draw close to Him while facing evil if we keep this verse in mind: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12)

When we’re reminded who we are fighting, it becomes much easier just to take care of business! That day, the goal of seeking justice for my client was primary; seeking vengeance on a wrongdoer was not. Besides, seeking justice produces joy while seeking vengeance produces gloating and other ugly emotions. God, in His wisdom, tells us, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord.” (Romans 12:19) If we walk in love, as we are taking care of business, we take ourselves out of the equation. When we commit to take care of the business God has given us, He takes care of everything else!
