Are you investing in earth’s treasures more than Heaven’s treasures? Our bank statement and credit card statement will accurately tell that story because—the numbers don’t lie! What story does your last year of expenditures tell? What do you have to show for the history of your expenditures? When God challenged me with this thought and I looked back over my past year of spending, it made me realize that the resources He had given me had been largely wasted on things I couldn’t remember, couldn’t find, or didn’t need. Wow! Proportionally, I’d invested very little on the things that last forever. It was very humbling to know that despite my great wastefulness, God was faithfully reminding me how to live wisely!

It has taken some time to dig myself out of my bad decisions so that I can free myself from all the foolish, temporal investments and maximize the resources God has entrusted me with—but He is guiding me! I want to change this pattern, because if I truly believe the Bible, then throwing God my leftovers is a stupid way to live! The Bible says: “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:20-21)

Do you have the temerity to look at your finances and determine where YOUR treasure lies?

If not, you may be lying to yourself about what really matters. If you’re investing in earthly things in a greater proportion than Heavenly things, then—you’re living foolishly. The things we treasure not only reveals our heart; it reveals our brain! If we are wise, our percentages reverse from giving a grudging 10% to God and reserving 90% to ourselves, to—allowing God to manage 100% of our resources and care for our fleeting human needs within His wise management. The missionary Jim Elliot said: “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” Such wise words for living!
