For about the first 20 years of my Christian life, I was a “box-checking” Christian. I went to church three times a week, gave tithes and generous offerings, had family devotions with my kids, participated in the church’s ministries, sang in the choir, sent my kids to Christian school, and invited church visitors into my home for dinner. Yes, I was a “Box-Checking Superstar” yet, now I realize that doing all these things were my substitute for knowing God. Sure, from time to time, my heart was touched, and I’d have a short internal revival, but it never really changed my heart. I was satisfied living the “religion” without the “relationship.”

My heart never really longed to be in God’s presence. King David described his relationship with God like this: “O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary. Because thy loving  kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee. Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.” (Psalms‬ ‭63:1-4‬) Do these verses describe your relationship with God? I lived 20 years of “Christianity” without this kind of relationship with God! It changed when I began to seek to know Him.

We only love God with the kind of passion described by David when we  know Him. We need to get to a place in our lives where we seek, thirst, and long after God: where we KNOW that His “loving kindness is better than life!” When we get to this place, our life is revolutionized by the experience! We seek to serve Him because it is the greatest desire of our heart—we want to bless Him for as long as we have life!
