One morning I woke up with a knot of fear in my stomach, because for several days I had not heard from one of my daughters who had been traveling in Bolivia. I immediately began texting and emailing people who might have heard from her. Amidst my fear and panic, God stopped me and reminded me that He knew exactly where she was and that He was in control. I needed to stop freaking out and talk to Him. Why was this easier said than done?

Simple—my lack of knowledge of God and His great power.

God used this situation to teach me that I had never learned what the Bible means by “Fear not.” The Bible says: “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” (Isaiah 41:10) At the thought of the bad things that may be happening to my daughter, I was all the things the Bible says I shouldn’t be—afraid, dismayed, sickened, and overwhelmed!

As I began talking with God, I asked Him to train me to entrust my greatest fears to Him—before I begin franticlly run to other people for assistance.

You see, I wanted to immediately call all my toughest military friends and mount a search—before talking to God. God was teaching me that I should frantically seek Him instead. This was definitely a first for me. I felt very small right then—but at that moment—I knew God was very big. In such a frightening crisis—to fall to my knees instead of just using my own resources and power—was a major training exercise. It’s a lesson that has continued to serve me well. God knows we all struggle with turning to HIM FIRST with our fears. Perhaps that’s why the command to “fear not” is given over 360 times in the Bible! Learning to turn to God with our fears requires training our mind and heart to trust Him. We must learn to develop this habit in everyday life, so it becomes a natural reaction.

God is our best weapon against fear!‬‬
