Sometimes we get so focused on producing results, or what the Bible calls “fruit,” that we forget to stay connected to the vine and thus, our harvest falls woefully short of God’s Divine plan because what we produce is the result of OUR efforts—WITHOUT God. Think about this—what kind of fruit would a farmer produce without the sun and rain? It would be some kind of artificial product, and be far from anything nutritious and appealing. So what kind of fruit do we produce on our own—if we’re apart from God? Jesus said—none:
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” ~John 15:1-5
Jesus made a very strong statement when He said, “without me you can do NOTHING.” Why? Where do you think your life comes from? Without Him, we don’t even have life, much less bear fruit!” Anything we do without Him is of such insignificance that He says it’s “nothing.” What are our plans for today—are they a bunch of nothing? Wow!!! To be fruitful we must be connected to Him. But be ready, because when we’re connected to Him, we can expect to have the bad pruned away. Don’t let that scare you, because what loving father would not rid his child of the things that disconnect the relationship or hurt the child? (Hebrews 12:5-11)
Do a self analysis: Is there is anything you’re doing or saying that you wouldn’t do or say if God were standing in the room with you, and thus, disconnecting too from the vine and keeping you from having a fruitful life? What is the purpose of your life?
If we really want to be productive during the time we have on earth, we will keep our primary focus upon staying well-connected to God. We will allow Jesus to “make us clean through the Word,” as He said in verse three. In Him, we are everything we were created to be; apart from Him, we are nothing!
