Do you ever think that evil is so pervasive in today’s culture that it’s too dangerous to let your guard down and open yourself to love others because—there’s just too great a chance that you’ll be eaten by the wolves? As a result, you are constantly on your guard, or live in suspicion, fear, or worry about what people think or—wonder if they’re out to get you. You stay so busy second-guessing people’s motives that you are nearly incapable of taking what anyone says at face-value. Or, you are overly-defensive so that even the most innocent statement is a personal attack. When we’ve been scarred by evil—it’s easy for our life to be characterized by this kind of paranoid, self-centered thinking. It’s a natural reaction. But, if we don’t address it, it will imprison us. We were NOT created to live this way.

When we were born again, we were given the freedom to live in love—evil doesn’t imprison God.

When Jesus sent His disciples out, He said: “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” (Matthew‬ ‭10:16‬) How is it we can dwell among the wolves of evil and have both a wise mind and an innocent soul? Well, when I begin to feel my soul losing a spirit of innocence because of the evil around me, it’s an indicator that I have either strayed from God or I need to be pursuing Him more passionately. When God’s presence is the strongest presence in my life, He gives me His wisdom and discernment about evil while also giving me a spirit of sweetness. He frees me to love without fear. He shows me WHO to love. He shows me HOW to love. God makes me unafraid to live and love transparently. He knows the heart of every man and He’s bigger than evil.

If you long to be free to love as innocently as you did  when you were a child—before sin’s scars blinded you and hardened you—then you must seek God with all your heart. He is not only waiting to be found, He is seeking you! God’s presence enables us to live in wisdom and the innocence of love—even in the midst of evil.
