Many times we call ourselves Christians, but instead, we’re faking the most real life we could ever live. I once participated in a Fabulous Fakes fundraiser, and I was very UN-fabulous fake as I tried to imitate the country music star, Faith Hill. Honestly, I botched her song quite badly. I couldn’t get into the spirit of the song because it wasn’t rooted in my soul like the songs that God has given me!

This experience was a reminder to me of when I was living as fake Christian. I was going through the mechanics of Christianity and thus, there was no passion in what I said I believed. I was faking what was real and I was—completely unbelievable. There was no power behind what I said or did in the name of Christ because I was living in religion without a relationship with Him.

“Hypocrite” is a harsh word, but Jesus didn’t mince words when He called them “children of hell.” (Matthew 23:15) Hypocrites pervert the beautiful gospel of grace and drive people into good works as a means to earn God’s love. Jesus said: “You hypocrites! Well, did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” (Matthew‬ ‭15:7-9‬) Does what we say about God match the passion of our heart? Is He the center of everything in our life?

If Christ is not the most passionate part of our heart, then we should do something different—either get in or get out—but stop pretending.

People are not stupid; they can spot a fake within minutes. Just like the crowd had no trouble figuring out I was NOT Faith Hill! Those who are searching for truth have no trouble identifying a “Christian” who is claiming that God is love, but who himself is devoid of love. We can fake a lot of things—but NOT love! God is love, and if we want to be the real deal, we must spend time with Him! When we do, we live our life as the unique song God wrote just for us, instead of living as poor imitations of what we are not.
