Have you ever tried to communicate something important to someone who does not speak your language? When I was in Athens, I knew just enough Greek to order food, but it would have been impossible for me to have a deeper intellectual discussion with anyone in the city who didn’t speak English. This describes my relationship with God once upon a time.

A Christian who is not close to God, or a person who has never become a child of God, is incapable of comprehending the depth of the wisdom of God because he does not speak God’s language well enough to go beyond asking God to meet his basic needs! He rarely has two way conversations with God or feels the Spirit leading any action or conversation. There is a reason for this limitation. The Bible says: “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words, not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.” (1 Corinthians‬ 2‬:12-14‬) If we don’t have God’s Spirit, than His language is “folly” to us. But when we become children of God, and allow His Spirit free reign, we gain the ability to have the “mind of Christ” (vs. 16) and live “in the spirit” as opposed to “in the world.” His Word comes alive and our heart knows His voice.

Speaking God’s language is a Divine opportunity!

God used the “universal language”—love—to bring me to Him. I’m so grateful that His love has no language barriers. It drew me to Him without requiring me to have an understanding of it. Then, I passionately sought to know more about Him by loving Him back—which meant studying His Word and developing a relationship with Him. The more I knew of His Word, the less I wanted to live my own way because I wanted to be as close to His loving presence as possible. His Word is my greatest love letter and His presence is my greatest desire. After being on both sides of the language barrier, understanding God’s language is a beyond amazing experience. Learning God’s language begins with experiencing His love!
