How much time do we spend in a tailspin, off the flight path God has for us? Have you ever had such a severe emotional or mental collapse that you felt like your life was spinning out of control, you couldn’t sleep, and could barely function enough to accomplish life’s bare necessities? I have. Many times. I’ve cried until I have no tears, stayed depressed for weeks, been unable to stop thinking about a situation, worried until I was sick, and completely wasted the precious time God had given me. It took a really, really bad incident for God to teach me not only how to prevent tailspins—but also —how to get out of them when a storm catches me by surprise. How?
God had to become more important to me than anything or anyone else.
When God is the most precious part of our life, He is more important that anything that could send us into a tailspin; and thus, when the storm hits, His strength overcomes those forces. Even when the storm is fierce enough to batter our plane, He keeps us on HIS course. I guarantee you—my plane is battered—but God keeps it beautifully on course. The only time it dives is when I allow relationships, wealth, accomplishments, family, etc., to become more precious to me than God. If those things or people fly out of control and into a tailspin—I go with them! Tailspins are prevented when God is on the throne of our heart.
The following excerpts from Psalms 18 are a beautiful picture of God’s care for us when we allow Him to be Lord of our life: “I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me. Thou will light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. It is God that girdeth me with strength, and makes my way perfect.” (18:3, 17, 28, 32)
When anything in our life is more important than God and that thing or person fails us, it will be “too strong” for us and it will take us down. God never fails us. When our relationship with Him is our greatest strength, He keeps us on course and “lights our candle” and “makes our way perfect.”
When God becomes our central focus, that means that our most important relationship—is with HIM—not with our family, friends, or our stuff. He becomes our greatest desire. When He is on the throne of our heart, He keeps us flying on course through any storm. He is bigger than the storm. His way is perfect! Then, as we begin each day, we WANT to ask God, “What would you have me to do today?” When my day starts like this, God guides me, and His answer is NEVER: “Go into a tailspin!” God loves US, and nothing sends Him in a tailspin.
