I often find myself struggling to love when it means I could be hurt. I have no problem giving love freely to those I know love me; but it’s when I hit that “space between” where—I know I’m loved, and when I know I could be hurt—that I hesitate. What do I do when I’m trying to love in that “space between?” That’s when I’ve got to take MYSELF OUT of the decision and put GOD IN! If my decision to love or to not love is based on whether I will be hurt, then I am IN the equation; however, if my decision to love or to not to love is based on whether God will be glorified, then I am OUT of the equation and—I am free to love!

Taking myself out of the equation, means the cost to me doesn’t factor in at all. I do it because God has already given me what I need most—Himself. The strength to love this way comes from dwelling in God’s presence on a daily basis.  The Bible says:

For this reason I kneel before the Father…that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit…so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith…that you…in love, may have power…to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory…forever and ever!” (Excerpts from Eph. 3:14, 16-18, 20-21)

When we are passionately seeking to know God, we discover how “wide and long and high and deep” His love is, and we are so full of His love that the thought of being hurt by giving love to someone who may hurt us, is as insignificant a risk as a pesky fly buzzing around our head. We are surrounded by love so great, that we are fearlessly led by the Spirit to love even those who hate us. God’s love fills all of our spaces of uncertainty and fear, and frees us to live in love.
