My Christian life is marked with a long road of painful potholes caused by my horrible choices, but they are also a critical reminder of how priceless the gift of God’s mercy is to me. My shameful past is an effective reminder for avoiding future selfish choices. The choices I made took me to places I’m ashamed to remember; and the grace of God is—something I never want to forget! Have you ever felt crushed by your past? I was—but knowing God as my best Friend has given me a life so full of hope that my sinful past rarely haunts me anymore. How, as a Christian, could I have ever strayed so far from Him?

The reason Christians seek satisfaction in sin, is because we fail to develop a REAL relationship with God. It is ONLY a love relationship with Him that gives us the deep fulfillment we otherwise seek in sin. As a “Christian,” I chose to be satisfied living in the cold religiosity of deeds, and I neglected to search for the deeply heart-satisfying relationship with God. Unfortunately, I had to get to the bottom of my broken life before I would turn around and allow Him to change my heart’s desire. Amazingly, even in my state of disreputable despair, He was still seeking me! Wow—my crimes against His love didn’t keep His mercy from rescuing me. His love is my greatest reason to stay away from sin, and keep Him at the center of all I desire.

King David’s prayer of repentance is dear to my heart: “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.” (Psalms 51:1-3) If you are drowning in your sin, remember, God’s mercy is chasing you down. He thought you were worth dying for! Turn around. Run to Him. Pursue Him with all your heart. He has a much better plan for you than you do.

“It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.” (Lamentations‬ ‭3:22-24‬)
