Do we worship God naturally and constantly, or is it something we claim to save for church or our private quiet time? If our “worship” is so compartmentalized, is it really worship at all? “Worship” is passionate adoration or devotion towards someone (or something). For example, when we worship someone—they’re never far from our thoughts and their presence is more important than anything else in our life. We save our best energy and effort for that person—right?
Worship is not just limited to a person—it applies to our goals and pursuits as well.
Think about who or what you hold in highest esteem—what totally captures your thoughts and imagination? What motivated you to get out of bed today? Is it your relationship with another person? Is it your job? Or is it the pursuit of some goal or possession? What lights up your entire countenance when you talk about it? Whatever, or whoever it is—that’s what you’re worshiping!!! Now ask yourself if that thing or person merits your worship like God does. He gave His life so we could live eternally. Has this object of worship done this for you?? God is definitely worthy of our greatest adoration!
What does adoration and worship of God look like?
When God is at the center of our worship, HE becomes reason for everything we do. We adore Him so much that His presence is more valuable to us than anything else. We forsake our old ways because—we’ve experienced HIM—and His ways are completely satisfying. Jesus said, “love the Lord your God with ALL your heart and with ALL your soul and with ALL your mind.” (Matthew 22:37) Augustine taught that when we love God first—our loves are “rightly ordered.” This is true worship of God and it makes us into the beautiful person He created us to be! When we worship anything or anyone less than Him—we cannot reach our potential!
When true worship of God flows from us, we are so inspired by awe, thankfulness and love for God that this prayer of Nehemiah is the sincere prayer of our own heart: “You are the Lord, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you.” (Nehemiah 9:6)
