It’s incredible to think that we would consciously make our trouble bigger than it needs to be—right? But as we get closer to God and see how He puts our trouble in His perspective, we realize that we often do just that. It’s like a cosmic law of cause and effect—the closer we get to God, the smaller our trouble seems.

How do I know this? Experience.

When I’m close to God—then the exact type of trouble is not so troublesome. God absolutely changes my perspective about trouble. How? The closer I stand to God, the more I experience His greatness, and the more it is evident that my problems are small. It’s like being hungry and standing in the dark while inside a kitchen full of food and then someone turns the lights on. Amazing!

When I first began to experience this phenomenon, it inspired me to write the song “Never Alone” which one line is, “Trouble is only, as big as you want it to be.” The experience of knowing God diminishes the debilitating effects of trouble.

The Bible says that when we experience God, we gain His perspective. It says: “We do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” (2 Corinthians‬ ‭4:16-18‬) Close to God, we see what we can NEVER see without Him; that is, the eternal things.

When we seek God FIRST, we find His presence eclipsing our trouble. Then, we are choosing to let God be as big as He is and we are no longer ruled by a troubled paper tiger. Close to God our view of Him is HUGE; and trouble—is SMALL.
