“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.” (Psalms 63:1, 3) When our relationship with God is the most deeply satisfying part of our life, then the Psalmist prayer is one of the most earnest longings of our heart.

Is God’s steadfast love so much better than life to you that your soul thirsts for Him as if in a dry desert?

If not—why not? Does it even matter?

For the majority of my “Christian” life—I did not, and—it didn’t matter to me. Why not? I was ignorant and deceived. What? Yes, and I paid a dear price for thirsting after the counterfeit “goodness” of the world. I abandoned the priceless gifts God gave me when He made me His child. Because the world had darkened my view of God, I declined His invitation to join the most satisfying relationship I could ever imagine. Meanwhile, I bought the empty passions of the world only to find that my thirst was never quenched.

Falling in love with God completely satisfies the thirst of my soul.

He has become the central source of my satisfaction because He is faithful, wise, loving, merciful, strong, and everything my soul ever desired in a relationship. He is so much more than the world led me to believe! His righteousness makes Him trustworthy, and the more I seek Him, the more I thirst for Him. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” (Matthew 5:6)

This is so true!

What are you thirsting for? If it is success, power, beauty, fitness, human relationships, possessions, or anything temporal—you are drinking salty water in the desert—like I did. Have you had enough?

Once you’ve tasted the sweetness of knowing God, that salty water is never very appealing. The sweetness of God keeps coming back for more, and with the Psalmist our soul will sing: “O God, you are my God, earnestly will I seek you…because your love is better than life.”
